Silver City, NM – The Western New Mexico University Volleyball team went up against the Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals. The Chaparrals defeated the Mustangs in three sets at their home court, Drag's Court.
Senior veteran
Bria Augustine (Bellflower, CA/Mayfair High School) ended the night with 9 kills, 1 ace, and 9 digs. Senior
Maggie Roe (Boulder City, NV/Boulder City High School) had a few momentum changing kills with 5 throughout the match. Freshman
Marlaynah McDonald (Silver City, N.M./Silver High School) also had 5 monster kills to help the Mustang offense get rolling. Junior
Madison Gardner (Oak Hills, CA/Oak Hills HS) made an appearance on the court tonight with 4 kills on the match.
Veteran
Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) ended the night with 13 assists along with 4 aces, three of which were consecutive in set two. Freshman
Hailey Hertzog (Phoenix, AZ/Chaparral High School) had 9 assists with 8 digs throughout the three sets.
As for the Mustang defense, Freshman
Eliana Moultrie (El Paso, TX/Canutillo HS) had a total of 16 digs against the Chaps. Madison Gardener put up an excellent wall tonight with 4 blocks for the match against LCU.
The Chaps took over match one with lots of energy and momentum on their side of the court which helped them defeat the Mustangs 25-16. In set two, the Mustangs had four-point lead early on in the match, ready to fight and battle back. After long rallies and kills on either side of the net, LCU won the set 25-21. For the final set, (set three), the Mustangs found themselves with another early lead 10-6 after a needed kill by
Maggie Roe (Boulder City, NV/Boulder City High School). Unfortunately for the Mustangs, LCU kill leader Hannah Froeschl took the Chaps to defeat WNMU 25-16.
WNMU Mustangs will continue playing at home, Saturday, October 30
th, in a match up against Angelo State University with the first serve at 12:00 PM MT.
