Mustangs Fall in Tough Loss Against Angelo State

San Angelo, TX – Western New Mexico University Football falls in a tough game at Legrand Stadium in San Angelo, TX, against Angelo State, losing 62-3. 

The Mustangs couldn't get the offense going having just 13 first downs and 166 total offense. The Rams offense had 24 first downs and 629 total yards of offense. 

The Mustangs ground game had 44 yards. Bryce Coleman (Tucson, AZ/Mountain View HS) rushed for 25 yards on 8 attempts. Devin Larsen (Gilbert, AZ/Queen Creek HS) and the passing game couldn't get much going either. Larsen threw for 122 yards on 24 attempts and would also throw an interception.

Jacob Wallace's (Marion, TX/Marion HS) first game back since week one was the hot target for Larsen. Wallace would have four catches for 59 yards. James Hoban (Parker, AZ/Parker HS) also had three catches for 20 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Kaleb Gutierrez (El Paso, TX/Franklin HS) had 14 total tackles, including 10 solo tackles. Jeremiah Tyler (Detroit, MI/Chandler HS) and Tylen Coleman (Maricopa, AZ/Maricopa HS) both recorded a sack for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs only score came in the fourth quarter, as Nick Herber knocked down a 23rd yard field goal.

Angelo State's game plan was to rush the ball and they did just that. Four running backs rushed for more than 50 yards. Kason Philips ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns. Alfred Grear rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown. Nathaniel Omayebu III found the end zone once, on 92 yards.

The Rams QB, Hagen Garvin went 11-16 on 276 yards and threw for 4 touchdowns. Garvin found four different receivers who would all find the end zone.

ASU's secondary had 7 pass break ups and four sacks. The reams would also stop the Mustangs 12 times behind the line.

WNMU will head home facing Eastern New Mexico for the Green Chile Bowl, on October 9th, for a 6pm kick off!
