Men's Basketball Freshman Joziah Ramos Donates to Boys and Girls Club of Central New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Men's Basketball newcomer Joziah Ramos was voted the 2019-2020 Boys Basketball Gatorade National Player of the Year for the state of New Mexico.

The award recognizes student-athletes who excel in the classroom, in addition to their athletic abilities and strong character.

Gatorade Player of the Year works in conjunction with the Gatorade Play It Forward initiative which empowers each state's winner to choose a local or national youth sports organization to receive a $1,000 grant from Gatorade. In addition to the initial $1,000, the winner has an opportunity to submit an essay to receive a spotlight grant explaining why the selected organization deserves additional support. Joziah selected the Boys and Girls Club of Central New Mexico (BGCCNM) as the recipient of the initial $1,000 grant, but his essay was also chosen for an additional grant of $10,000 which will also be awarded to BGCCNM.

A participant in the AVID (Advanced Via Individual Determination) college readiness program, Ramos has committed his time off the court to tutoring children in the community, while also volunteering his time to local carnivals at the community center.

"Organizations like the Boys and Girls Club have given me role models that I can look up to, to ultimately be a better person. They mentored me and gave me advice and always cared for me. They have impacted my community by giving kids just like me, a getaway place other than the streets, someplace safe," said Ramos.

"I could not be more proud of Joziah! He is exactly the type of young man we are trying to bring to WNMU and build our basketball program with. He did not just talk about impacting his community he went out and did it. The Boys and Girls Club of Central New Mexico is incredibly fortunate to have a young man in their community who cares enough to do everything he can to give back! We at Western New Mexico could not be more excited to have Joziah in the purple and gold in the fall!" said Coach Gibson.

A four-year member of the varsity men's basketball team at Atrisco Heritage Academy High School in Albuquerque, Ramos averaged 19.9 points, 2.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game throughout his career. A two-time, back-to-back, 5A state champion his success translated to the classroom, where he maintained a 4.42 weighted GPA.
