Softball Contunue Conference Play at WTAMU and ENMU

CANYON, TX / PORTALES, N.M. – Western New Mexico will take to the road this weekend, continuing conference play against the Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M, Friday in an evening doubleheader at 5 & 7 p.m. CST. The Mustangs will then travel back in state to rival Eastern New Mexico for a mid-day doubleheader, Sunday at 11 and 1 p.m. MST.

LAST TIME OUT:
Mustang softball got their conference portion of the season off to a hot start, sweeping the Mustangs of MSU Texas in the conference opener to push their home record to 5-0.

Game one was a nail biter, as WNMU rallied from behind to hold on to the 7-6 win. Game two started off similar to the first, but the Mustangs offense took off, scoring eight runs in the first inning. The success continued on, scoring eight more runs through the following three innings forcing a five inning mercy rule. Four Mustangs notched a homerun in the 16-2 victory.

Up against the No. 23 Tarleton Texans to close out the weekend, the Mustangs struggled in game one to close out their defensive half of the innings, giving up two big innings in game one that was called in five.

Game 2 was more of a battle. Tarleton's bat remained hot opening the game with a homerun just the second batter in. Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena HS) would make it three straight games with a homerun, scoring the tying run in the bottom of the first.

After a couple of quiet innings for both teams, Tarleton got rolling with three runs in the fourth, and two more in the fifth to pull in front. WNMU would score one run in the seventh, but fell short 7-2.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
WEST TEXAS A&M LADY BUFFS (10-7, 0-0)
Friday's doubleheader will mark the Lady Buffs first conference contests of the season, despite having already played four league opponents at the LCU Invitational two weekends prior.

WTAMU went 3-1 in Lubbock, besting UT Permian Basin, Eastern New Mexico and host Lubbock Christian.

Senior Alyx Cordell produced a number of hits at LCU, bringing her hitting streak to six games. The infielder, went 3-for-3 against UTPB, and 4-for-4 against ENMU going 9-for-12 over the weekend in the batter's box.

Sophomore, Kyra Lair sees the most time in the circle for WTAMU, appearing 14 times this season for an 8-4 record and 3.84 ERA with 52 strikeouts.
EASTERN NEW MEXICO GREYHOUNDS (6-7, 0-0)

With a day off in between games, the Mustangs will then travel back in state to the Portales to grapple with the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico.

In a series that dates back to 1998, the Mustangs hold a 31-15 edge over the Greyhounds but have only won a single meeting as conference opponents.

Having already faced two conference foes, ENMU has yet to play and official league game. Elysa Rodriguez leads her team with a .364 batting average, recording 16 hits in 13 games. Freshman Brooke Leger is the go to pitcher for ENMU right now, with a 3-1 record in five appearances and a 3.50 ERA.
