Game Recap: Softball |

Game One Error Costly; Mustangs Fall to WT

CANYON, TEX. – Looking for a better series against West Texas A&M, the Mustangs held the lead against the Lady Buffs up until late in Game 1. WT claimed the sweep in five innings, tallying double digits hits in Game 2.
GAME 1:
The scoring got started early for the Mustangs in game one. Aliehs Ortiz (Rio Rancho, NM/V. Sue Cleveland HS) sprinted to first on a drop third strike to get on base for her team, and avoid two straight outs. Continuing her hitting streak, Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena HS) rounded to second to put her team in scoring position. Grisdey Paredes – Alvarez followed up with a single to score Ortiz, and then Kaila Burnett (Nanakuli, HI/Nanakuli High & Intermediate School ) got on, on a fielder's choice enough to score Habitzreuther for two runs in their first at bat.
WT grabbed a quick three outs in the second, setting themselves up to score a single run in the bottom of the second.
Habitzreuther added her second hit in the top of the fifth for an RBI. Burnett snuck one down the third base line, enough for a double and an RBI.
Needing to hold on to the lead for just two more innings, things took a turn in the sixth when a throwing error started off the Lady Buffs half. WNMU got two outs following the error, but WT went on a rally scoring four runs before the Mustangs could force the final out.
Unable to answer in the seventh, WNMU fell 6-4 in game one of the series.
GAME 2:
In game two, it was WT who would score in the first frame off a series of mishaps at home plate. The Mustangs would bounce back, as Kaila Burnett (Nanakuli, HI/Nanakuli High & Intermediate School ) got her second homerun of the season, for the tying and go-ahead run in the top of the second.
Salzman, just the first batter up for WT, answered with a solo shot herself to tie it back up at 2. Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University HS) responded with a strikeout for the following batter, but could not contain the following hitters as a handful of hits gave way to a WT lead.
A pitching  change for the Mustangs, gave way to a couple more runs before Lyanna Waddell got a strikeout and a pop up to close the inning.
The Lady Buffs tacked on four more runs in the third, thanks to a three run homer and some savvy base running.
Samantha Corral (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS ) grabbed a base in the fifth, but would be left stranded as WT secured the win with a trio of strikeouts.
