SILVER CITY, N.M. – In the final weekend of conference play, the Western New Mexico women's basketball team struggled offensively against the Belles of Angelo State, Thursday night on Drag's Court. Shooting at just a .296 clip for the night, Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) led the Mustangs scoring with 14 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Belles nearly took a 10 point lead, before Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) connected in the paint to put WNMU on the board. On the verge of being held to single digits, Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) pulled down the offensive rebound, setting up Kaela Chavez (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School) for the three to trail by seven after the first quarter. Of the 12 points scored in the first, six came from Kaela Chavez (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School), and the other half from Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL).
Behind by as many as 14 in the second quarter, WNMU closed out the half with a 6-3 scoring surge to cut into the deficit.
Historically, the third quarter was when the Mustangs fell behind the most, but this time around WNMU outscored their opponent 21-20, coming within six a number of times throughout the third. ASU eventually regained their double-digit lead, heading into the final frame.
Despite pulling down five offensive rebounds, WNMU only converted three second chance points falling shy in the fourth. Kinley Brown for the Belles capped off the game's scoring with a fast break layup for the 74-54 win.
