Clark Posts Career High 31 Points Against UTPB

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Looking to split the season series, the Mustang women's basketball team could not fend off the defensive efforts of the visiting UTPB Falcons Saturday on Drag's Court. UTPB pulled down 51 rebounds to the Mustangs 29, aiding in their 79-63 victory and the sweep. Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) posted her first thirty point game, tallying 31 on the evening, going 10-for-20 from the field and 11-for-14 at the charity stripe.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) – 31 PTS | 10-20 FG | 11-14 FT | 5 REB
Kaela Chavez (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School)12 PTS | 3 REB | 1 AST | 1 BLK
Kyanne Kowatch (Tularosa, NM/)10 PTS | 3-5 FG | 2-3 3FG | 2 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL

HOW IT HAPPENED:
UTPB wasted no time establishing themselves both on offense and defense. Off the steal, UTPB made a fast break toward the basket to go ahead by half. Back-to-back buckets from Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) gave way to a 6-0 run, to tie it up at 13. Rory Carter for UTPB used a pair of three pointers to give her team the lead under the two minute mark. Trailing by ten with a minute left, Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) found the net to put her team within eight at the end of the first.
Trailing by as many as 11 in the second half, both teams traded baskets in the final few minutes. Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) found success in the paint, recording 12 points in second quarter alone. Clark went 3-for-4 from the field, and a flawless 6-for-6 at the line helping her team to outscore the Falcons 19-17.
Finding themselves in a similar situation in the opening minutes of the third, Kyanne Kowatch (Tularosa, NM/) added a pair of free throws in the final ten seconds in an effort to come back. Going into the final ten minutes of play, the Falcon's strong presence on defense was too much for the Mustangs. Alexus Quaadman held a height advantage allowing her to grab a team high 12 rebounds, 6 of which were offensive.
Forced to foul their opponents, WNMU sent UTPB to the line four times in the final few minutes. Using their second twenty point quarter of the game, the Falcons took home a 79-63 win and the season sweep.

UP NEXT:
Women's Basketball will remain at home for their final two games, welcoming the Belles of Angelo State and Lady Chaps of Lubbock Christian next Thursday and Saturday respectively.
