Tennis Records First Wins of the Season in Arizona

Phoenix, AZ – Both the Mustang Men's and Women's tennis teams competed against some Arizona schools this past weekend, earning their first wins of the season.
Against the Spirit of Ottawa Univ. the men sparked a late comeback in singles play but could not complete the win as it came down to a tie breaker at the No. 5 position that decided the final point. Ottawa clinched the first point of the dual in doubles play, but Ruan Du Preez (Cape Town, South Africa /Swellendam HS), Shaurya Piplani () and Jose Neto won their respective single matches to tie the match at 3.
On the women's side, the Mustangs cruised to their first win of the season 7-0 over Ottawa sweeping every matchup, not giving up a single point. Their success continued on against Mesa Community College sweeping their doubles and single matches to start the season 2-0. The men also claimed their first win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Mesa Community College.
Both teams closed out the trip against Arizona Christian Saturday at the Paseo Racquet Club. Julia Tozzi (Limeira, Brazil) and Camila Gomez (Bogota, Colombia) secured the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the No. 1 position. Tozzi and Gomez continued their winning ways through singles play at No. 1 and No.2 respectively. WNMU also took home wins at No.3, No. 4 and No.5 to secure the 6-1 team win.
For the men, the duo of Du Preez and Barr claimed a quick a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, with David Valles (Guadalajara, Mexico/HYCIG) and Shaurya Piplani () securing the doubles point at the No. 2 spot with a 6-4 win. Each of those Mustangs carried their success through individual play, scoring five total team points to ACU's 2.
The teams will travel to St. George, Utah this weekend to play a series of games against a couple of Utah schools, as well as regional opponent Colorado Mesa.
