Softball Splits on Day 2; Record 20 Hits in Victory Over SFU

TUCSON, AZ – After a tough loss to end day 1, the Western New Mexico softball team went up against an eager Lindenwood team to open Day 2. A handful of Mustang errors, cost them multiple runs early, falling by mercy rule in five innings. With a quick turnaround the Mustangs were back on the diamond to take on Simon Fraser under the lights. WNMU tallied 20 hits in game two, scoring 12 runs to cap off day 2 of the Cactus Classic.
GAME 1 – Lindenwood Lions
Anxious to start the weekend, and their season the Lindenwood Lions came out strong in the opening frame. A trio of errors allowed a trio of runs for the Lions in the first inning. Better defense in the second turned into a couple of runs for the Mustangs in their half, thanks to a shot to right field by Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View HS). An error by LWU and the quick speed of Eliza Ortiz (Santa Clara, N.M/Cobre HS) allowed a second run to score.
Within an arm's reach of tying it up, another set of WNMU errors gave way a number of runs for the Lions despite only recording two hits. It took seven hitters into the lineup before WNMU got their first out, by that time though, four more runs had already crossed home plate.
Unable to respond in the following innings, and behind by more than eight runs at the end of the fifth, the Mustangs succumbed to the mercy rule in game one, 11-2.
GAME 2 – Simon Fraser Clan
Determined to end their day on a high note, errors continued to haunt the Mustangs barely an inning in. A single to center field by Miranda Simjian (Humboldt, Arizona/Prescott HS) started it off the WNMU, followed by savvy base running to put runners in scoring position. Another single from Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View HS) would score her team's first run, setting up those to follow. In total, the Mustangs tallied five hits in the second, to take a 3-1 lead.
After tying it up on a triple to right field by SFU's Chelsea Hofner, WNMU continued to rack up hits, increasing their lead by one in almost every inning that followed.
Entering the final inning leading by two, Eliza Ortiz (Santa Clara, N.M/Cobre HS) started a late two out rally with a shot to left field. After a couple more singles, SFU switched up their pitchers in an effort to close out the inning. To no avail, Miranda Simjian (Humboldt, Arizona/Prescott HS) recorded a single of her own, leading the pitcher to walk the next two batters scoring two free runs. Resorting back to their previous pitcher, SFU finally caught the last out but not before WNMU scored five runs on five hits.
Needing just three outs to claim the win, it was SFU would sparked a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh, threatening to tie it up. Grabbing the final out on a ground ball, WNMU clinched their second win of the tournament, and matched last season win record – having yet to start the regular season.

With one final game to go in the Cactus Classic, the Mustang softball team will close out the Cactus Classic against California University of Pennsylvania, tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
