Mustangs Unable to Hold Off Greyhounds In Portales

PORTALES, N.M. –. Looking to split the season series and steal a game on the Greyhounds home court, the Mustangs ball handling was a major factor in the final score of Saturday's matchup. Three Mustangs finished in double digits, led by 11-point performances from Taylor Allison (Little Elm, Texas/Denton High School) and Kaela Chavez (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School).

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Taylor Allison (Little Elm, Texas/Denton High School)11 PTS | 4-6 FG | 3-5 FT
Kaela Chavez (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School)11 PTS | 3-8 3PTR | 3 REB | 1 AST
Paullina Rodriguez – 10 PTS | 5 REB | 2 AST

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In front of a home crowd, Portales local Zamorye Cox started things off with a steal and a three for a quick 3-0 lead.
  • Baskets from Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) and Abigail Walter (Fort Worth, TX/Nolan Catholic HS) put WNMU within two, just under the three minute mark.
  • Similar to the start of the game, this time a steal by the Greyhounds resulted in a last second jumper as they took a 10 point lead after the first.
  • It took nearly half of the second quarter for the Mustangs to find the basket, as Taylor Allison (Little Elm, Texas/Denton High School) made the most of her time at the charity stripe.
  • Each team took turns making shots beyond the arc, as Walter and Kaela Chavez (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School) added six points for their team before the buzzer.
  • Immediately out of the break, WNMU put four more on the board.
  • The Greyhounds lead grew to 36 with seconds remaining in the third. On the verge of single digit scoring, Taylor Allison (Little Elm, Texas/Denton High School) grabbed the offensive rebound and the basket before the horn to put WNMU at 11 for the quarter.
  • Every time Western would score, Eastern had an immediate answer. Off the bench, Amanda Perea (Albuquerque, New Mexico/La Cueva High School) notched five points with a pair of free throws and a three, to go a long with a jumper and a three from Chavez to close out scoring.
  • ENMU led in almost every category, taking a 83-53 win in Portales to sweep the season series.
UP NEXT:
