Women's Basketball Sharp Shooting Not Enough Against UAFS

SILVER CITY, N.M. –.In a second half push for the postseason, the Mustangs returned home to Drag's Court Thursday night for a crucial matchup with the Lions of UAFS. Although they put together their second highest point total this season, the Mustangs could not withstand the power of the Lions in the paint, falling 86-78.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy)24 PTS | 10-19 FG | 3-6 3FG | 7 REB | 2 AST | 4 STL
Kaela Clark – 17 PTS | 4-6 FG | 9-12 FT | 2 AST | 2 STL
Jenika Padilla (Las Vegas, NM/West Las Vegas)12 PTS | 5-9 FG | 2-3 3FG | 10 REB
Kaela Chavez (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School)10 PTS | 3-8 FG | 2-2 FT | 2 REB

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Quick to establish their presence in the paint, the first six points from UAFS were all In the paint. The pressure continued on both ends of the ball, with UAFS heavily denying WNMU the opportunity to score from anywhere on the court. Jenika Padilla (Las Vegas, NM/West Las Vegas) found the net from three point range to push her team into double-figures, but trailing by seven.

Continuing to establish their offense, the Lions added 20 points in the second quarter to take a slightly comfortable lead at the break. Having lost the battle of the first basket in the two previous quarters, another three by Padilla sparked what would be their team's largest quarter. Off the fastbreak and quick to release, Kaela Chavez (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School) chipped in to her three point average, helping to pull within three.

Under three minutes to play, UAFS pushed themselves back up to a double digit lead, forcing the Mustang defense to foul in the closing seconds. Kyanne Kowatch (Tularosa, NM/) put in one last layup, but it wasn't enough as UAFS took home a 86-78 win.

Over half of the Lions points were scored in the paint. Looking at the numbers, WNMU shot an impressive 28-of-54 (51.9%) and 10-of-19 (52.6%) beyond the curve but committed three more turnovers in the loss.
