Clark Sets Season High Against Angelo State

San Angelo, Tex. – In search of their first win for the 2020 season, the Western New Mexico Women's Basketball were in San Angelo, Texas Saturday afternoon for game two of their road series. Up against the Belles who opened the year with a dominant win over UT Permian Basin, the Mustangs kept it close up until the second half. WNMU fell cold in the third quarter, limited to just four points as ASU claimed a 69-50 win.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) – 12 PTS | 4-6 FG | 1-1 3PTR |3-4 FT | 5 REB
Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) 12 PTS | 4-5 FT | 5 REB | 1 AST
Alexis Jones (Dallas, TX/) - 7 PTS | 2-2 FT | 5 REB | 2 AST
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Winning the opening possession, Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) made a statement sinking a three to open play.
  • Jenika Padilla (Las Vegas, NM/West Las Vegas) followed up with an offensive rebound, dishing it back out to Rodriguez for the second chance jumper to take a quick 5-0 lead.
  • ASU would tie it up with their first three of the afternoon. They would then take the lead with a basket off a WNMU turnover.
  • At that point in the game, Rodriguez would be responsible for seven of the team's nine points.
  • Alexis Jones (Dallas, TX/) had the full court open, taking advantage with a fast break layup allowing Western to go up by six.
  • After one quarter of play, WNMU held on to a 17-16 lead.
  • Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) made a three to open the second quarter to keep her team ahead.
  • The Belles went on an 8-0 run midway through to go up 24-20.
  • In a last second effort to close the gap between the teams, Kaela Chavez (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School) sank a three – capping off a steal from Alexis Jones (Dallas, TX/) – to go into the half trailing by just three.
  • ASU claimed the first three baskets of the third quarter, before Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) pulled down the offensive rebound, following through with the layup to score.
  • With a minute to go, Jayla Jackson (Killeen, TX/) ended a scoring drought for the Mustangs, but the Belles built up 22-points in the third, making over fifty percent of their shots.
  • Six of the eight free throws came within the first few minutes, as WNMU shot 78.6 percent from the line to outscore ASU 16-14 in the fourth.
  • After falling behind in the third, the Mustangs could not overcome the deficit falling 69-50 in the end.
