Vastrushkina Records New Season High Against Divisional Opponent ENMU

Silver City, N.M. – Hosting their first match of the 2020 calendar, against cross state rival Eastern New Mexico the WNMU Mustangs dug themselves into a hole early on leaving them to fill the empty space for the rest of the night. Both teams were held to just six points out of the gates, before the Greyhounds took charge with 20 plus points in the second and fourth to run away with a 61-46 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The ten minute opening period saw both teams trade blows, with WNMU taking a 6-3 advantage off a layup from Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School). ENMU would tie things up shortly after with a three as the teams were at six a piece going into the second.
  • The Greyhounds went on a 5-0 run to start the quarter, before Daria Vastrushikina hit a midrange shot for her first score of the night.
  • Quarter two remained to be in favor of the Greyhounds as they went on to score 23, while holding the Mustangs to 13, leading 29-19 at the half.
  • Shooting at a 54.5 clip, WNMU went 6-of-11 from the field and 2-4 from behind the arc to outscored their opponent 14-12 in the third.
  • Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) got a three point shot off before the buzzer to put her team within eight going into the final frame.
  • After an efficient third, the teams would trade places as ENMU took the reigns on offense going 7-of-13 from the floor, and converting on 5-of-7 second chances opportunities at the line.
  • The Greyhounds went on to score 20 points in the fourth, running away with the 61-46 victory.
  • Vastrushkina led the WNMU scorers with 14, tallying a new season high as well as her second game in double-figures.
  • Kayla Clark's (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) 11-points made it her second consecutive game in double figures.
