Four Mustangs in Double Figures Against Angelo State

San Angelo, Tex. – The Mustang men's basketball team, closed out their four game road series Saturday afternoon against the Rams of Angelo State. Western averaged over fifty percent from the field, and sank 11 three pointers, to the Rams six. However, ASU was given 32 second chance opportunities at the foul line, giving them the upper hand in a 92-79 win in Stephens Arena.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

Elijah Holifield (Atlanta, GA/Pace Academy) – 12 PTS | 5-11 FG | 7 REB
Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate) 10 PTS | 5-7 FG | 2 REB | 6 AST
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • ASU claimed the first possession off the jump ball, quickly converting five points before Cj Vanbeekum opened the WNMU scoring with a three.
  • Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate) chipped in six points, going back-to-back-to- back .
  • Three of the Mustangs 11 total three-pointers, came consecutively around the 13 minute mark in the first half, each contributed by a different player.
  • Taking their largest lead at 12, ASU started to pull away before a jump shot from Nathan Pelissier (Paris, France /Lycre Albert Camus ) put a halt on the Rams scoring run.
  • CJ Vanbeekum (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise) hit his second three of the half, putting his team within five. By the end of the half, Vanbeekum was a perfect 3-3 from the field and 2-2 from beyond the arc.
  • A WNMU turnover gave way to an ASU possession, as they got off a layup to go up by 12 at the break.
  • Credit Avalos for the first basket of the second half, making quick work on the opposite end of the court after an ASU basket.
  • The Mustangs would go on a 10-0 run from that moment, to pull within four.
  • WNMU's offense would string together a few baskets, but struggled to close the gap.
  • Tallying his sixth basket of the night, Malik Sanders (Durham, NC/Smithfield-Selma ) put in one last layup to get the Mustangs to 79.
  • Letting the shot clock run down, and ASU dunk closed out the scoring for both teams as the Rams captured the 92-79 victory.
