2020 Mustang Softball Schedule Released

Silver City, N.M. – Entering her third season at the helm, Head Coach Elsa Cocker and the Western New Mexico Softball team announce their 2020 schedule. The schedule features nine home series, and two tournaments each with five opportunities to watch the Mustangs.

Nine players return from last year's squad, while Coach Cocker adds five transfers and three versatile freshman to the 2020 roster to replace her graduating class.

The Mustangs open their season with a three game series against familiar foe, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) member, Adams State. The Grizzlies will make the trip south to Silver City for a doubleheader on Saturday Feb. 1 at 12 and 2 p.m. followed by a single game on Sunday Feb. 2 at 12 p.m.

Preseason will continue for the ladies of Western, as they travel to St. George, Utah for the second consecutive year for the Dixie State Tournament. Over a span of three days, WNMU will face off with five different teams. Three hail from the Great Northwest Conference, one from the PacWest and one from the RMAC. Tournament play will kick off on Thursday Feb. 6 and go through Saturday Feb. 8. Day one and two will be doubleheaders for the Mustangs, followed by a single game Saturday.

The team will then turnaround and travel three hours west to Tucson, AZ for the 2020 D2 Cactus Classic. With an identical playing format to the Dixie State tournament, the Mustangs will play five games over three days against University of Hawaii - Hilo, Colorado Mesa, Lindenwood, Simon Fraser of out British Columbia, and California University of Pennsylvania.

After two long weekends of tournament play, conference play will kick off at the end of February with a meeting of the Mustangs of MSU Texas on Feb. 28. Along with the 10 familiar faces of last year's Lone Star Conference members, the Mustangs will meet up with 6 new teams with the addition of the Heartland Conference, and former Division III member UT Tyler.

Following Lone Star Conference policy each team will play a single round robin schedule compiled of two games against each conference opponent. Each two game series will consist of a doubleheader on the designated day of competition. The conference tournament is scheduled for April 30-May 2, to be hosted by the No. 1 seed. The top-10 teams out of the regular season will be eligible, and will play in a single-elimination tournament. The team with the highest winning percentage out of the regular season will be crowned the LSC Champion, while the winner of the conference tournament will be named the LSC Tournament Champion and earn the conference's automatic qualifier into the NCAA postseason.
