Women's Basketball Puts on Three-Point Clinic in Dominant Win Over UT Tyler

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Coming off a loss to the No. 4 ranked team in the nation Thursday night, the Mustangs refused to make it two straight Saturday afternoon against UT Tyler. The Mustangs dominated on all cylinders, including a three point clinic, tallying 17 on the afternoon in 31 attempts. Draining over fifty percent of their shots from deep, WNMU also went 25-of-57 (43.9%) from the field to go along with 35 rebounds and 16 team assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Credit Kyanne Kowatch (Tularosa, NM/) with the first three of the afternoon to get the Mustangs tally going.
  • To go up by half, Jenika Padilla (Las Vegas, NM/West Las Vegas) recorded a steal and then the layup for the Mustangs.
  • The separation started early as WNMU went 5-for-8 behind the arc in the first quarter alone to go up by 13.
  • After leading the team in scoring two days prior, Kayla Chavez built on her stat line with a three pointer to put her team up by 21.
  • UTT put in both free throw attempts for the final two baskets of the half, but WNMU headed into the locker room with a comfortable 33-15 edge.
  • Looking to write a different story in the second half, UTT strung together a series of baskets to cut into the WNMU lead.
  • Leave it to Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) who would not give in, recording a three, then playing tough defense to grab a steal and the fast break for a quick five points to her total.
  • After being held to single digits in the first two quarters, the Patriots put together 18 in the third, half of which came from the foul line and forcing six turnovers.
  • Off the bench, Amanda Perea (Albuquerque, New Mexico/La Cueva High School) came in and didn't take long to find her groove, going back to back from deep to give WNMU a thirty point advantage.
  • With the basket and the foul, Abigail Walter (Fort Worth, TX/Nolan Catholic HS) took to the line, recording the final three points of the game and solidifying the Mustangs 73-40 victory.
UP NEXT:
The Western women will take to the road for a pair of games, looking to build on their overall and road record. For the second time in as many weeks, the Mustangs head to West Texas A&M for a Thursday night matchup, before heading to Portales for a rematch with the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico Saturday.
