Duo of Walter, Rodriguez Lead WNMU Offense Against WT

Box Score CANYON, TX  – Having won three of their last four games, the Western women's basketball team traveled to Canyon, Texas to take on the Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M for the second time this season. Inside the First United Back Center Thursday night, the Mustangs put together a big fourth quarter but could not dig themselves out of the hole as the Lady Buffs swept the season series with a 74-41 win.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Abigail Walter (Fort Worth, TX/Nolan Catholic HS) - 10 PTS | 4-7 FG | 2-3 3PTR
Paulina Rodrigez - 11 PTS | 5 REB | 3 AST
Jenika Padilla (Las Vegas, NM/West Las Vegas) - 7 PTS | 3-6 FG | 1-2 3 PTR | 5 REB

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • WT made the most of their offensive rebound, putting a quick three points on the board to open play.
  • None other than Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) put the Mustangs first basket on a pull up jumper.
  • A jumper from Jenika Padilla (Las Vegas, NM/West Las Vegas) put WNMU within four, but WT went on a 6-0 run to go up by 10.
  • Freshman, Abigail Walter (Fort Worth, TX/Nolan Catholic HS) sunk a long range shot to cut into the WT lead early in the second.
  • Three different players for the Lady Buffs sunk back-to-back-to-back three pointers starting to create more distance.
  • Jenika Padilla (Las Vegas, NM/West Las Vegas) answered with a three of her own to snap the WT scoring run. Rachel Francisco (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) closed out the first half with a driving layup, as the teams headed into the locker room for the break.
  • Quarter three was all WT, scoring 23 while holding WNMU to just two points, free throws at the very beginning of the quarter from Jayla Jackson (Killeen, TX/).
  • The roles were reversed in the final frame as WNMU found their groove. At the 3:20 mark, WNMU had outscored WT 18-1 in an effort to close the deficit.
  • WT got out of their slump and put together 14 points in the fourth, while WNMU had their biggest quarter with 21 points with the help of Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) and Abigail Walter (Fort Worth, TX/Nolan Catholic HS) who combined for 14 points.
UP NEXT:
