Chavez Posts Season High Against No. 4 Texas A&M Commerce

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Back home and looking for their third straight win, the Mustangs hosted the No. 4 ranked Texas A&M Commerce Lions on Drag's Court Saturday evening. The Commerce defense was too hot to handle, converting 31 points off of WNMU turnovers. The Western defense however did win the battle of the boards, pulling down 36 on the night.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Kaela Chavez (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School)16 PTS | 6-9 FG | 4-6 3PTR | 2 AST | 2 REB
Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)8 PTS |3-6 FG | 2-3 FT | 10 REB

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Keeping trend to games prior, Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) started things off with a three.
  • Trading blows, each team was persistent in defending the offensive efforts.
  • At the line, TAMUC shot for two to go up by six. Kaela Chavez (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School) though would cut that lead in half with her first three of the night.
  • Quick to defend, and quick to release the Lions offense took advantage of a Mustangs turnover to go up by eight.
  • A minute thirty to play in the half, WNMU banked the final three baskets to trail by four.
  • It took three minutes for Commerce to go up by double-digits.
  • A technical would only fuel the Lions offense, going on a 7-0 run. Starting to uphold their season margin, TAMUC went up by as many as 23, scoring a 31 for the quarter.
  • Kaela Chavez (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School) caught fire in the fourth in a last minute spark to close the gap. The sophomore went 2-3 behind the arc, to add eight points.
  • Chavez finished the night with a season high 16 points, missing just three attempts for the night.
