Rodriguez Chips in 10 Against LCU

Lubbock, Tex. – Going up against one of the top teams in the nation, the women of Western took on the defending National Champions the Lady Chaps of Lubbock Christian Thursday night in Rip Griffin Center. A slow start caused WNMU to fall behind early, needing to play catch up for the rest of the night. WNMU kept it close in the third, but the defending national champions proved to be too much as the Mustangs fell 64-40.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) – 10 PTS | 3-8 FG | 2-6 3PTR | 2-2 FT | 4 REB
Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School)8 PTS | 3 REB
Kyanne Kowatch (Tularosa, NM/) – 7 PTS | 5 REB | 2 AST

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After a few missed shots from both teams, Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) put one in under the basket for the first score of the night.
  • LCU quickly responded with a basket of their own to tie it up.
  • Just before the buzzer to end the quarter, LCU put in one more basket capping off a 13-0 run, holding WNMU to just a single basket in the opening frame.
  • To start the second, Alexis Jones (Dallas, TX/) knocked in her first of the night on a stepback jumper, ending the WNMU scoring drought.
  • A three from Rachel Francisco (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) put her team into double figures half way through the second.
  • Taylor Allison (Little Elm, Texas/Denton High School) connected at the stripe to put the Mustangs at 12, but LCU continued to build on their lead capping off a half with a dunk to make it 32-12 going into the break.
  • After the break, Kyanne Kowatch (Tularosa, NM/) got the first score for WNMU on a driving layup.
  • At the six minute mark, Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) added four points to the WNMU total with a couple of baskets.
  • Pulling down the offensive rebound, Kyanne Kowatch (Tularosa, NM/) would take advantage of the second chance sinking a three.
  • WNMU would go on a 8-0 run to close the third quarter.
  • With one left to play, Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) caught fire scoring five points in the first two minutes of play to push her team of the 30-point mark.
  • With two minutes left to play, Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) got the and one, which gave way to the WNMU defense forcing back to back turnovers and a couple of baskets in WNMU's favor, scoring seven points in span of thirty seconds.
  • It would be LCU however that would snag the final basket, keeping their perfect record alive one more night with a 64-40 win.
