Lubbock/Angelo, Tex. – It has been a total of 11 days since the Mustang men's basketball team played their last match. On the road for the 12
th time this season, the Mustangs travel to Lubbock and Angelo, Texas this week to continue conference play. The Chaps of Lubbock, Texas will play host to WNMU Thursday at 7:30 p.m. CST, followed by a meeting with the Rams of Angelo State Saturday at 4 p.m. CST. This weekend's contests will count towards the Mustangs divisional record, having only faced one other division opponent so far this season.
A LOOK BACK:
The Mustang men closed out the first half of the season on the road, making the long journey to the south part of Texas to take on Texas A&M International and Texas A&M Kingsville. In game one, WNMU enjoyed a 10-point, 39-29 lead at the half. While they continued to lead for a majority of the second half, the Dustdevils slowly chipped away at the deficit and took the lead with seconds remaining. Fouled on a three-point attempt, Malik Sander would take to the line with three opportunities and the chance to retake the lead. Not only did he sink all three shots, he secured the win for the Mustangs as they held on for the 70-69 win, making it two straight for WNMU.
Looking to keep the momentum into Saturday's match, the Mustangs had a tall task of breaking the Javelinas momentum as they were riding a five-game winning streak. Despite coming within four, and outscoring TAMUK 43-41 in the second half, the Javelinas snapped the Mustangs winning streak with an 81-75.
SCOUTING THE CHAPS:
Sitting at 6-4 overall, 3-2 in conference play and a 4-1 record on their home floor. Against the MSU Texas Mustangs, LCU had a come from behind and close 73-72 win, making it three straight for the Chaps. As a team LCU averages 74.8 points, outscoring their opponents by a 6.7 margin. Shooting .450 from the field, and .376 from deep, their offensive output puts them just behind WNMU at ninth in scoring offense in the LSC.
Rashaan Proctor gets it done for the Chaps offense, averaging 11.0 points, while also chipping in 4.8 rebounds per game. Scoring in double-figures in each of the last three LCU wins, Proctor had a season high 21 in the win over MSU Texas. Leading the scoring is junior guard, Lloyd Daniels sinking just over half of his shots taken with a 54.1 percentage from the floor.
SCOUTING THE RAMS:
Saturday's competition will take the Mustangs to Angelo, Texas where they will take on the Rams of Angelo State. 7-2 overall, and 3-2 in league play, the Rams snapped a two-game skid with a 84-75 win over Cameron Dec. 21.
Senior guard, Ronald Bell has seen time in all nine contests for the Rams, racking up a 16.6 scoring average, shooting 53.7 from the field. Jeremy Hayes adds a 15.4 points, as Angelo ranks sixth in the LSC offense tallying 81.1 points per game.
