Mustangs Take Down Tarleton on the Road to Make it Two Straight

Stephenville, Tex. – Riding high off a win just two nights prior, the Mustangs traveled to Stephenville looking to continue their winning ways. Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) made it two straight games in double figures, boosting her team to a 52-48 win over the Texans Saturday afternoon in Wisdom Gym. Prior to this meeting, the Mustangs had yet to take a game over TSU while also snapping their six game win streak.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) – 13 PTS | 4-10 FG | 3-6 3PTR | 2-3 FT | 9 REB | 2 AST
Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) 8 PTS | 3-4 FG | 2-4 FT

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • On cue, Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) started things off with a three to put WNMU on the board first.
  • Despite a turnover on the possession prior, Jayla Jackson (Killeen, TX/) posted up a wall on the opposite end with a block and the rebound. Jenika Padilla (Las Vegas, NM/West Las Vegas) made it a two straight with a three of her own to put WNMU up 6-3.
  • Leading for most of the first, Tarleton capped off the opening quarter with a layup to go up 13-12.
  • TSU claimed the first two baskets of the second, before Taylor Allison (Little Elm, Texas/Denton High School) struck from paint.
  • A back and forth affair, Jenika Padilla (Las Vegas, NM/West Las Vegas) was a perfect 2-2 from the foul line to put the Mustangs up by one. An opportunity to get ahead TSU converted on 1 of 2 free throws to tie it up at 22 going into the locker room.
  • Midway through the third, a series of free throws allowed WNMU to go up 29-27.
  • From the outside center of the arc, Rachel Francisco (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) sank a three to give the Mustangs their largest lead at seven.
  • Using a 20-16 scoring edge in the third, WNMU led by four going into the final frame of play.
  • Upholding the lead throughout the forth, Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) put in a layup to surpass the fifty point mark.
  • With seconds remaining, Clark put WNMU out of reach with a final free throw giving her team the 52-48 win.
