Holified Post Season High 31 Points Against Tarleton

Stephenville, Tex. – The Mustang men ran an impressive offense Saturday afternoon in Wisdom Gym on the campus of Tarleton. Shooting over forty percent from the field, to go along with 13 three pointers Western New Mexico were a strong contender for the Texans. However, the Texans were give 27 opportunities at the charity stripe to the Mustangs eight total for the game, making a difference in the 81-67 final in favor of TSU.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Amarion Cash (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe) and Elijah Holifield (Atlanta, GA/Pace Academy) started things off with a pair of threes to tie it at six. Holifield added a block, rebound and the jumper to take the first lead of the game.
  • Around the 14 minute mark, Holifield added back-to-back shots to put WNMU up by four.
  • TSU went on a 6-0 run to go up 20-18 as the 10 minute mark rolled around.
  • Under ten to play. Tarleton started to pull away but never going up by more than six. Similar to the start of the game, the duo of Holifield and Cash chipped shots from deep to trail by one at the half.
  • In the first half alone, Elijah Holifield (Atlanta, GA/Pace Academy) had already reached the 20 point mark, going 4-of-6 from behind the arc and 8-of-10 from the floor.
  • Out of the locker room, each team traded blows converting on each of their first two possessions.
  • Just five minutes in, TSU took advantage of WNMU turnovers to take their largest lead at eight.
  • In a scoring drought, it wouldn't be until the 14 minute mark that a jumper from Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate) snapped the Mustangs back into play.
  • From then on the WNMU offense fell quiet, needing to play catch up.
  • To cap off a season high, and possibly a career game Holifield brought his three-point total to seven with a shot at 1:13.
  • Even though TSU shot 59 percent at the foul line, they received 19 more second chance opportunities than the Mustangs.
UP NEXT:
After a tough road trip, the Mustangs return home to Drag's Court for a clash with the Lions of Texas A&M Commerce Thursday night, followed by a Saturday afternoon contest with newcomer UT Tyler.
