Mustang Defense Record 13 Steals Against TAMUC

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Mustang men opened their two game home stand against the Lions of Texas A&M Commerce Thursday evening. Leading at the half, converting on both ends of the ball, the Lions wrote a different story in the second half coming from behind to take a 77-73 win on Drag's Court. Elijah Holifield (Atlanta, GA/Pace Academy) continue to be a bright spot for the Mustang offense, adding 22 points to his season total for his second consecutive game in double figures. As a team the Mustangs forced Commerce to turn the ball over 20 times, while also recording 13 steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A&M Commerce jumped out to an 8-0 lead with a pair of three pointers.
  • Just as he has done in games prior, Elijah Holifield (Atlanta, GA/Pace Academy) opened up the Mustangs scoring with a three of his own.
  • Off the bench, Nathan Pelissier (Paris, France /Lycre Albert Camus ) grabbed the offensive rebound and put it back in to tie the game at 11.
  • Drawing contact behind the arc, Andrew Leonard (Tucson, AZ /Cienega ) was sent to the line, sinking all three of his free throws to give WNMU the first lead of the game by a score of 14-11.
  • Trading baskets under the ten minute mark, TAMUC went ahead by 7.
  • Pressure on the defensive end led to a series of Mustang steals, which would eventually turn into baskets.
  • Tied at 38 with under a minute to play, Holifield finished the half how he started, finding the net from behind the arc to put his team ahead by three.
  • WNMU's defense forced 11 turn overs in the opening frame, while adding nine steals to their stat line.
  • Out of the break, the Mustangs worked to build their lead. At the line, Rodney Simon (Boston, MA/Randolph ) put one in to increase the lead to 10.
  • Tallying a total of six, threes in the second half alone, TAMUC used one of them to go up by three which eventually turned into a five point edge with under five to play.
  • Malik Sanders (Durham, NC/Smithfield-Selma ) dished out eight assists for the night, but kept one for himself tying the game at 68.
  • A series of Mustang fouls allowed the Lions to pull away just enough to take home the 77-73 win.

The Mustangs will look to rebound Saturday against newcomer UT Tyler. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. MST.
