Women's Basketball Deliver Win in Denton

Denton, Tex. – Kitty Magee Arena and the Texas Woman's Pioneers played host to the Western New Mexico Mustangs Thursday evening. Both teams looking to break a skid, WNMU needed to break trend and stick with their opponent early. Despite being outscored in the first, WNMU outscored the Pioneers in the following three quarters including a 21 point performances in third on their way to a 60-53 victory on the road.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School)16 PTS | 5-10 FG | 1-2 3PTR | 5-7 FT | 5 REB | 2 AST
Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) – 15 PTS | 5-11 FG | 5-7 3PTR | 3 REB

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Picking up where she left off last Saturday, Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) started things off with a basket in the paint. She added a three just under the seven minute mark to even the score.
  • With three minutes to go, TWU went on a 6-0 run to take a 16-10 lead.
  • It would be WNMU though who got off the last shot of the quarter to trail by four.
  • Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) added a quick six points in the second to keep her team within a digit.
  • Brought to the line, Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) sunk both free throws as the Mustangs trailed 24-25 at the end of the half.
  • To start the third, TWU took a six point lead but the combination of Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) and Amanda Perea (Albuquerque, New Mexico/La Cueva High School) put WNMU back on top.
  • 2-for-2 at the charity stripe, Kyanne Kowatch (Tularosa, NM/) put her team ahead by seven.
  • Just when the Pioneers got ahead, Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) did what she does best connecting behind the arc with nine seconds left in the third to regain the edge.
  • Shooting over 60% from deep, WNMU used a 15 point performance in the final frame to uphold their lead.
  • The Mustangs converted 10-of-17 three pointers on the night, and shot 42.6% from the floor to snap their skid and take home a 60-53 victory.
