Mustangs Battle With Tough West Texas Team

Silver City, N.M. – Down a handful of players, Western New Mexico looked to some other their reserves to fill some big roles against a tough West Texas A&M team Saturday afternoon. With three minutes to go in the first, Western found themselves down by double-digits, ultimately leaving them to make up the points later on. WT shot nearly fifty percent from the field to take home a 69-52 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • While WT claimed the first two baskets, Kyanne Kowatch (Tularosa, NM/) answered with a three pointer to start things off for WNMU.
  • Ten points later, the Mustangs would break their silence with another three pointer, this time from Rachel Francisco (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy).
  • With the layup and the foul, Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) started on her stat line with three points marking the 8th and 9th points for WNMU.
  • Heading into the second, WNMU would turn it up a notch putting in 11 points just one shy of WT.
  • Free throws in the third were a difference maker, had WNMU converted three more the scoring difference in the third would have again been only one.
  • While both teams shot over fifty percent from the field, but WNMU were outscored 23-19, with WT going up by 20.
  • Both teams shot 33.3 percent from the floor in the fourth, by WNMU took to charity stripe eight times to the Lady Buffs four, to outscore them 13-10.
  • Kayla Clark's (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) 16-point performance makes it her third consecutive game in double figures, as well as a season high.
  • The Mustangs committed 13 turnovers, but also forced 11 on the WT end. Putting the pressure on defense, a couple of those turnovers were due to shot clock violations.
UP NEXT:
For the second time since the new year, the Mustangs will take to the road heading to Texas Woman's then to Tarleton. Thursday's game against Texas Woman's is scheduled for 7 p.m., while Saturday's game will follow the usual schedule with a 2 p.m. start time.
