Volleyball Splits on Day One of Cal State San Marcos Tournament

Game 1 vs. Saint Martin's
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Senior outside hitter, Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) made a statement in match one of the day finishing with a double-double, 23 kills and 12 digs.
  • Deyzha Samuelu (Garden Grove, CA/Edison High School) contributed four of the teams 13 blocks.
  • Sarah Campoli (Weatherford, TX/Azle High School) dished out 34 assists and three of the teams 10 service aces.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Mustangs capitalized on Saint's errors, taking an 8-5 lead in set one.
  • Kills by Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) gave the Mustangs an 18-12 advantage, and never looked back. A Saint's service error would give WNMU set one, 25-19.
  • The teams kept it close through set two, before kills by the Saints pushed them to a 17-12 edge. Despite a run of kills by the Mustangs, Saint Martin's took set two 25-20.
  • Set three was similar to two, with the Saint's taking the set 25-21 on a service ace.
  • Set four was a must win for the Mustangs to stay alive. Back-to-back service aces from Sarah Campoli (Weatherford, TX/Azle High School) put her team up by six.
  • Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) continued to add to her stat line with two services aces to tie the match at two sets a piece, and force a deciding set.
  • Set five was tightly contested, with the Saint's getting to eight first to switch sides. The Mustangs rallied off a series of kills to take the lead and eventually the match with a 15-12 set win.
 
GAME 2 vs. Cal State San Marcos
TOP Performers:
  • Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) continued to shine in game two, earning her second double in as many games with 11 kills and 10 digs.
  • Samuelu added another 3.0 blocks in the second match, for a total of 6.0 blocks on the day.
  • Sarah Campoli (Weatherford, TX/Azle High School) and Sophia Mitchell (Houston, TX/Katy Taylor High School) split the setting duties, contributing 12 and 15 respectively.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Out of the gates, CSUSM seemed to have a grasp on the Mustangs, pulling ahead 13-10.
  • A kill by Delaney Seitz (Hillsboro, OR/Century High School) and a Cougar attack error put WNMU within two.
  • CSUSM had a 23-20 lead, but the Mustangs would not go down without a fight with a series of kills and an Cougar attack error gave WNMU the 24-23 edge.
  • The teams would trade points until a Cougar kill ended the match at 27-25 in favor of the home team.
  • Set two saw the Mustangs sprint to a 9-6 lead early on, before CSUSM answered with a string of their own points to retake the lead at 13-11.
  • WNMU lost some steam in set three, falling 25-13.
QUICK HITS:
  • The Mustangs broke a four-year streak of dropping their season opener with the win over Saint Martin's today.
  • Last season against Barton, WNMU tallied 17 total blocks. Versus Saint Martin's today the team totaled 13, the second most since that game a year ago.
UP NEXT:
  • WNMU will have a quick turnaround, meeting up with the Cougars of Azusa Pacific Friday morning for their lone match of the day.
  • Favored to win the PacWest, Azusa Pacific went 24-7 last season to take the PacWest Championship and earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament.
