Football Opens Conference Season at West Texas A&M

Canyon, Tex. – After hosting Central Washington in their home opener last weekend, Head Coach Frank Tristan and the Mustang football team are back on the road to open conference play. The Buffs of West Texas A&M return to Buffalo Stadium after being on the road for two weekends.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT:
  • The Buffs were picked to finish 6th in the preseason poll, and are receiving votes in the latest AFCA Top-25 poll.
  •  2-1 on the season after dropping their conference opener to Tarleton, 28-58 in Stephenville. Opened the season with wins over Azusa Pacific (35-16) and William Jewell (49-21).
  • WT proves to storm out in the second half scoring 28, 35 and 28 points in the second half while holding their opponents to score only 17-points total this season.
  • On the defensive side of the ball is Hayden Dennis who leads with 32-tackles this season and 2.5 tackles for loss.
  • Offensively, Nick Gerber is 42-of-75 with 463 yards through the air for three touchdowns, adding two additional touchdowns on the ground. He averages just over 150-yards game this season.
  • Gerber has a quite a few options, one being senior tight end Jordan Johnson. Johnson scored twice for the Buffs against Tarleton, scoring his fourth rushing touchdown, while also throwing for his first career touchdown.  
  • Tobias Harris anchors the Buffs special teams, combining for 447 kick return yards, while also averaging 38.2 yards on punt return.
 
MUSTANGS TO WATCH:
  • CJ Fowler (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge HS) continues to stand behind center, racking up 823-yards this season with three touchdowns.
  • A favorite of Fowler's is junior receiver Reggie Colson III (Hollywood, FL/South Borward HS). Colson leads the team with 19 receptions for 311-yards, with two touchdowns so far this season.
  • On the ground for the Mustangs is senior back DeAndre Williams (Tucson, AZ/Tucson Magnet). Williams has 42 carries on the season, for 285-yards, adding one touchdown. He is just shy of averaging 100-yards a game.
  • Defensively, the duo of seniors Roosevelt Calhoun Jr. (Reno, NV/Hug HS) and James Lee (Bayard, NM/Cobre) combine for 54 tackles this season and 7.0 tackles for loss.
 
In a nine game series, the Buffs hold a 6-3 edge and a 3-2 record at home. WT traveled to Silver City last season, taking home a 27-17 victory.
