Mustangs Match Up with Division i NAU Saturday

Flagstaff, AZ – Head Coach Frank Tristan and the Western New Mexico football team are back in action Saturday. Traveling further up north this week to Flagstaff, Arizona to take on the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona (1-1).
 
 
WEEK 1 Recap:
 
  • Traveled to Surprise, Arizona to take on the Spirit of Ottawa University – Arizona.
  • About 2.5 minutes into the game Spirit's QB Austin McCullough found Antonio Day from 10-yards out to cap a three-play, 15-yard drive.
  • WNMU would answer back at the 9:34 mark on a 37-yard rush by DeAndre Williams (Tucson, AZ/Tucson Magnet)
  • Evan Rios (Madera, CA/Madera HS) showed off his strength with a 54-yard field goal to tie the game at 10 going into the second quarter.
  • A 28-yard rush by CJ Fowler (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge HS) put the Mustangs in scoring position, with Vincent Brown (Los Angeles, CA/Artesia) taking it in for a 1-yard rush and the touchdown to tie at 17.
  • It took barely 5 minutes for Vincent Brown (Los Angeles, CA/Artesia) to score his second touchdown with a  38-yard rush to go into the half tied at 24.
  • It took two plays and 17-yards for the Mustangs to strike first in the 3rd quarter, as CJ Fowler (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge HS) found Reggie Colson III (Hollywood, FL/South Borward HS) from 16-yards out to take their first lead of the game at 31-24.
  • OUAZ would chip away on yards to get into scoring position, scoring two more times, including the winning touchdown with just under two minutes to play.
 
Players to Watch:
 
  • DeAndre Williams (Tucson, AZ/Tucson Magnet) made a statement in his last first game in a Mustang jersey against Ottawa. The senior running back from Tucson, AZ led the rushing offensive efforts with 16 carries for 102 yards for a touchdown.
  • Credit Vincent Brown (Los Angeles, CA/Artesia) with two of the Mustangs four touchdowns against the Spirit. The Los Angeles native, finished with 10 carries for 78 yards.
  • Through the air, Josh Powell led with 9 receptions for 122 yards.
  • Senior, Roosevelt Calhoun led the defense with 12 total tackles, 6 of which were solo.
  • James Lee (Bayard, NM/Cobre) added 6 tackles of his own, including a sack for loss of 9-yards.
  • Junior transfer kicker Evan Rios (Madera, CA/Madera HS) made his debut last week for the Mustangs knocking down a 54-yard field goal.
 
 
Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (1-1):
  • This will be the 24th time meeting up with the Lumberjacks. The Mustangs will look to tack on one more loss for NAU in an overall series record of 16-6-1 in favor of NAU.
  • The WNMU defense will aim to stop senior quarterback Case Cookus, who is in the running to beat the career touchdown of 94. He currently has 78.
  • Cookus is a force through the air, throwing for 373-yards last weekend in a 65-41 loss to Arizona.
  • Head coach Chris Ball recorded his first win at the helm of Lumberjack football in their win over Missouri State on August 29.
  • Jalen Cook leads his team with 14 tackles through the first two games
  • Offensively, NAU has many options with sophomore Brandon Porter, junior Stacy Chukwumezie, freshman Terrell Hayward and junior Nate Stinson. Each of the players recorded touchdowns in the opening games.
  • It will be a battle of special teams, as junior kicker Luis Aguilar enters the weekend having been named the Big Sky Player of the week.
