Mustangs Tabbed 9th in LSC Football Preseason Poll

McKinney, TX. -- Head Coach Frank Tristan and the Western New Mexico Mustang football team were tabbed 9th in the LSC Football Preseason Poll by coaches and representatives across the league. 

Tallying 28 points, the Mustangs are preceded by UT-Permian Basin (8), Texas A&M- Kingsville (7), West Texas A&M (6), and Angelo State (5).

Cross state rival Eastern New Mexico rounds out the top-4, behind A&M Commerce (3) and Midwestern State (2). Defending Lone Star Conference Champions, and NCAA Playoff Quarterfinalist Tarleton State took home the top spot with 217 votes.
 
Midwestern State's Juwan Johnson was selected as 2019 LSC Preseason Offensive Player of Year, while UT-Permian Basin's Chris Hoad took home 2019 LSC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honors.
 
The Mustangs finished the 2018 season 0-10. With a year to recruit, and develop his players Head Coach Frank Tristan returns 14 starters, including All-Conference Second Team members center Tytus Timoteo (Honolulu, HI/St. Louis School), and wide receiver Kourde Roberts (North Las Vegas, NV/Legacy). Along with the young talent, Senior running back DeAndre Williams (Tucson, AZ/Tucson Magnet), Senior linebacker Roosevelt Calhoun, and Senior defensive lineman James Lee (Bayard, NM/Cobre) return for their final season with the Mustangs.
 
Along with the eight familiar conference foes, the Mustangs open their 11- game schedule against Ottawa University of Arizona on Sept. 7, before traveling up to Northern Arizona on Sept. 14. The Mustangs then play host to Central Washington on Sept. 21 before conference play begins.
