Guerra Saves Mustangs In Kingsville

Kingsville, TX – Looking to break their losing streak, the Mustangs headed to Kingsville, Texas for their series against the #5 Javelinas.

What was originally supposed to be a single game Friday, turned into a doubleheader due to weather in Saturday's forecast.
Game one took place under the Friday night lights, as the Mustangs stepped up to a pitching lineup who leads the conference. It showed, as Sadie Castillo struck out the first three Mustang batters. Kingsville owned the batter's box in the opening inning. Western managed to limit the Javelinas to four runs and four hits, while leaving three runners stranded to close out the inning.

Western kept the Kingsville runs to a minimum, especially in the third grabbing three quick outs for what would be the only scoreless inning for Kingsville.

Threatening to go without a hit, and a full count, Makayla Guerra (Silver City, N.M/Silver High School) recorded the lone hit for the Mustangs in the top of the fifth inning.

Kingsville scored two runs in the fifth, enough to fuel the team to an 8-0 win in five.

Just 30 minutes later, with Jayln McClain (El Centro, CA) on the mound Kingsville dominated the first inning. Despite grabbing two strikeouts, the Javelinas were strung together a series or hits to score six runs. They would go on to score three more runs in the third before coming to a halt by the Mustang defense.

McClain struck out two more for a quick fourth inning, but Kingsville's reigning player of the week, Breanna Smith grabbed two strikeouts of her own to close out the game.

In five innings, Kingsville scored nine runs on eight hits.

For the Mustangs it was a quiet day, totaling only three hits between the two games. Two of which came at the hands of Makayla Guerra (Silver City, N.M/Silver High School). McClain went the full four innings for the Mustangs in game two, striking out four, while walking six. In game one, Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) went full-time on the mound, walking three with one strike out.

Western will have another chance tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the third and final game of the series.
