Game Recap: Softball |

Vega Blanks Pioneers in Game Two; Mustangs Fall In Nine Inning Thriller

Denton, Tex.-- A lightening delay pushed back game two of the series nearly an hour, but didn't phase the Mustangs as they looked to continue their winning ways on day two against the Pioneers of Texas Woman's.

Yasmeen Gastelum (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) got things started in the top of the second, with a 2-RBI double down the left field line, scoring Makayla Guerra (Silver City, N.M/Silver High School) and Grisdey Paredes - Alvarez who were walked earlier in the inning.

Behind the pitching of Jalyn McClain, Western maintained a steady defense, while fighting thier way through inning after inning to keep TWU scoreless.

With two runners on and only one out, Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) only needed two pitches to send shot deep over the center field wall for her 10th homerun of the season. A single from Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake) scored Alicia Habizreuther shortly before, giving the Mustangs a 6-0 advantage in the top of the seventh.

Western would cap it off on double play to blank TWU for the second time in as many days.

Jalyn McClain took home her third win of the season, allowing six hits, walking five and striking out two. In the batters box, Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) and Yasmeen Gastelum (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) each recorded two hits, for four of Western's eight hits to start the day.

GAME TWO:

Looking to for the sweep, the Mustangs faced a team who have been known for come backs, taking game three in their series against Texas A&M - Kingsville and Angelo State earlier in the season.

It would be Western to score first though on a single from Alexis Gonzalez (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley), bringing around Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School)

A pinch hitter for TWU in the bottom of the fifth proved to be answer as the Pioneers scored thier first run of the series, tying the game in the bottom of the fifth.

A double from Makayla Guerra (Silver City, N.M/Silver High School) followed in the top of the sixth with the leading runner on third, three quick outs followed leaving the game tied with an inning left in regulation play.

It would be the Pioneers who would double in the bottom of the ninth, followed by a single shot to right field to bring around the winning run for TWU and the 2-1 game.

Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) went the full 8.2 innings for her team, allowing just two runs on six hits, with five walks and three strikeouts, to complete her freshman campaign 4-13. Western also recorded six hits, with Alexis Gonzalez (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley) leading the way going 2-for-4.

Western New Mexico Softball concludes their season taking the series 2-1 over Texas Woman's, finishing with a 7-33 record overall, 6-24 in conference play.
