Game Recap: Softball |

Mustangs Fall Twice on Day One

Silver City, N.M. – In their final home series of the 2019 season, the Mustang softball team took to the field to face off with the Rambelles of Angelo State.

Game one of Friday's doubleheader started off fairly even, as the teams took each other down quickly through the first two innings. Top of the third, a triple from lead-off hitter Gordon gave way to a homerun from teammate Barnhill to score two.

With two outs on the board, ASU crushed another two-run shot over the center field wall to push their lead to four.

With bases loaded in the fifth, and threatening to extend their lead, the Mustangs pulled together behind the pitching of Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) to keep ASU scoreless.

Not only did ASU threaten on the offensive end, but denied WNMU a hit up until the fifth inning. Alexis Gonzalez (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley) saved her team from a shutout with a double to left field. It wouldn't be till the bottom of the sixth though, that the Mustangs got on the board after Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) singled to right field, driving in a run.

One last effort in the bottom half of the seventh fell short, scoring only two runs to fall by a final score of 9-3.

Nearly 30 minutes later, the Rambelles took an early lead scoring four runs in the second off two, two-run homeruns. An inning later, another two-run shot would only be the beginning of a six run inning for the 10-0 edge.

With one last chance to get on the board, Makayla Guerra (Silver City, N.M/Silver High School) would not disappoint going deep to left field for a solo homerun and the lone run for the Mustangs.

Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake) recorded the other hit for the Mustangs, going 2-for-5 on the day, hitting .400. Gonzalez, Guerra and Maldonado were the three other Mustangs to record hits on the day.

The teams will be back on the field tomorrow at 12 p.m., but not before six seniors are honored and recognized for their careers at Western.
