Softball Prepared for Battle of East vs. West

Silver City, N.M—Coming off one of their longest road trips of the season, the Mustang softball team has the luxury of being home for the next two weekends. They kick off their home stand this Friday against cross state rival Eastern New Mexico.

Not only did the team endure a 12-hour bus ride there and back last weekend, but also faced the #5 team in the nation. The Javelinas of Texas A&M – Kingsville entered the weekend with a top national ranking, as well as sat atop the conference standings.

The Javelinas made quick work of the Mustangs, completely the series sweep and a series shutout, by scores of 8-0, 9-0, 8-0.

Makayla Guerra (Silver City, N.M/Silver High School) saved her team in the top of fifth, recording what would be the only hit of the game , with a single shot to left center.

Kingsville managed to lay down a bunt in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring their eighth and final run to close the game in five innings. They continued to produce at the plate, stringing together a series of hits in the first inning to go up 6-0.

They went on to score an additional three runs in the third to take the 9-0 victory.

Guerra recorded a hit in all three games to put her second on the team hitting a .310 on the season.

The battle of East vs. West comes to Silver City this year as the visiting Greyhounds look to break a 16-game losing streak, dating back to the beginning of March.

Sitting at 10-23 overall, 6-15 in conference, Eastern tallied wins over UTPB and Texas Woman's to sit two spots above the Mustangs. Their .286 batting averages puts them 7th, and 10th in pitching with a 7.34 ERA.
Individually, Iliana Mendoza boasts a .410 batting average, putting her third overall in the LSC. Starting 27 of the games with 83 at bats, Mendoza has 16 runs on 34 hits, 7 doubles, one homerun and 13 RBIs. Kimberly Herron sees significant time on the mound for Eastern. With a 6-16 record so far, the senior has a 9.31 ERA, striking out 37 in 105 innings pitched, giving up 161 hits and 118 runs.

Having swept the series last year in Portales, the Mustangs will look to take full advantage of being on familiar territory. A single game is set for a 12 p.m. start time Friday, followed by a double-header on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
