Softball Drops Games One and Two at Midwestern

Wichita Falls, TX – Western New Mexico softball was on the road today, taking on the Mustangs of Midwestern State. What was originally scheduled for Friday was moved up to Thursday due to rainy weather in the forecast.

Despite cloudy weather, the Mustangs took to the diamond in game one of Thursday's double-header. Similar to last weekend, WNMU got on in their half of the opening inning on a SAC fly from Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) to score Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola).

MSU would not score until the bottom half of the second, bringing in two runs to take the lead. The home team added on in the bottom of the third to round out the 5-1 win.

Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) pitched another full game for Western allowing five runs on seven hits, with three walks and a single strikeout. On the offensive side, Miranda Simjian (Humboldt, Arizona/Prescott High School) recorded the lone hit for WNMU, while Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake) racked up her 9th and 10th stolen base of the season.

In game two of the series, it was Midwestern who struck first after a fielding error in left field. A three-run homer immediately followed bringing the score to a quick 4-0. A couple more hits followed but were left stranded.

MSU's Abbie Lancaster went the full 6.0 innings for her team, allowing just two hits and two walks. Midwestern tallied runs in the first, scoring four more in the latter half of the game to run away with a 8-0 win, going 2-0 on the day.

Lyanna Wadell stepped in for Western, giving up six hits and four runs and three walks. Coplan and Simjian recorded the two hits for the Mustangs.

Western falls to 2-16 on the season, 1-7 in conference play. They will look for a repeat of last weekend, grabbing a win in the final game of the series tomorrow at 12 p.m.
