Late Rally Falls Short Against Aggies

Silver City, N.M— As the winds calmed down, the Mustangs took to the field Saturday for the final game of the series against Cameron.

Lyanna Waddell started off on the mound for the Mustangs.

Grisdey Paredes – Alvarez started off the game with a big snag down the third base line for the first out. Waddell would follow up with a reaction play on the mound for out number two. With a runner in scoring position, a pop-up ended the Aggie's half of the inning.

Unable to come up on the offensive end, the Mustangs came up big on the other side of the ball. Nothing seemed to get past Waddell on the mound as she snatched another line drive, then tagging the runner on third for a big double play.

The two teams remained scoreless through three, before Jayln McClain (El Centro, CA) came in to relieve. Cameron capitalized on the pitching change scoring five runs, three of which came from Khamari Edwards three run homer.

Cameron added one more in the fifth, but the Mustangs rallied back to score three of their own. Grisdey Paredes – Alvarez got things going with a single to left field, starting the trend, Four more shots to the outfield brought in three runs for the Mustangs.

An Aggie error led to a Mustang run, with the team trailing by one.

Unfortunately Cameron would connect multiple times in the seventh, extending their lead to eight, scoring six runs to take home a 12-4 win and the series sweep.

Lyanna Waddell falls to 0-5 on the season, allowing five runs on six hits, walking four and striking out one.
Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) was 3-for-3 on the day, while Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) added two hits of her own, with one run and two RBIs.

Western will hit the road next weekend to take on the Javelinas of Texas A&M – Kingsville before returning home for two series.
