Windy Conditions For Softball on Day One

Silver City, N.M— Sunny weather and winds in full force Friday, the Western New Mexico Mustang Softball team played host to the Aggies of Cameron University in the first two games of the series.
The first inning was just a preview to what the rest of the game would be like as the Aggie's Brenna Busby opened the game with a homerun.

A quick two outs started the Mustangs half of the inning, before Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) tied the game with a solo shot of her own.

Cameron hit a 2-run homerun in the second, followed by back-to-back homeruns from the first two batters in the third, gave the Aggies 5-3 edge. In her third at bat, Brenna Busby hit another deep shot over the left field wall, this time driving in three runs to put her team in double figures.

Alexis Gonzalez (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley) opened up the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo homerun of her own, to close in on the Aggie lead.

Later on in the sixth inning, with the threat of two outs, Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) reached on an error by the left fielder to drive in two runs for the Mustangs.
Cameron extended their lead to seven, before one last home run by Miranda Simjian (Humboldt, Arizona/Prescott High School) cut the lead to six.

Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) started off the Mustangs, before Lyanna Waddell made her appearance to finish the game.

Western scored eight runs on 12 hits, three of which were homeruns. Alexia Gonzalez and Grisdey Paredes – Alvarez went 3-4 on the day, driving in a combined four runs and two RBIs.

In game two, the innings flew by with Cameron taking a 4-0 lead, until the Mustangs half of the fourth inning cut into the lead. Carolyn Castillo's (Silver City, NM/Silver City) two-run homer started it off, followed by a double from Gonzalez scoring one more.

Despite making plays early on the game, Western could not put it together late in the game. The Aggies capitalized on Mustang errors to score ten runs in the sixth. The Mustangs could not come up with the answer in the bottom half, falling 14-3.

Jayln McClain (El Centro, CA) went the full game for the Mustangs, falling to 1-10 on the season. McClain allowed 14 runs on 20 hits, walking four and striking out two.

The teams are back in action tomorrow at 12 p.m.
