Mustangs Set For Series Against Cameron

Silver City, N.M.—Coming off a tough series on the road against Texas A&M- Commerce, the Western New Mexico Softball team is back in town for a home series against the Aggies of Cameron University.

LAST TIME OUT:
The Mustangs stepped up to the plate against a strong Commerce team last weekend,  scoring three runs in game one on homeruns from Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) and Makayla Guerra (Silver City, N.M/Silver High School) in the second inning. The 3-1 lead was short lived, as the Lions answered with two runs of their own in the third to tie.
Inning four was all Commerce drilling three homeruns, two of which scored multiple runs. The Mustangs were unable to score in the fifth, leading to a 13-3 loss.
Game two was no different for Commerce taking a quick 4-0 lead in the opening inning, and continuing their hot hitting in the innings to follow, including another 10 run inning in the fourth.

Western's two hits resulted in a single run scored, falling 21-1 in five.
Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) started on the mound for the Mustangs, going a total of four innings before Jaylyn McClain stepped in to face the final five batters for Commerce.
Lyanna Waddell had her fourth start of the season in game two, pitching four innings before Vega came in to close.
Similar to game one, the Mustangs Alexis Gonzalez (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley) hit one deep to left center to give her team a 3-2 edge in game three. A dropped fly in the third however, led to five runs scored for Commerce. A three run shot over center field, followed by a solo bomb to left field saw the Lions run away with a 15-3 win in game three.

UP NEXT:
The Aggies of Cameron University enter this weekend's series with a 21-11 overall record, and 8-7 in the LSC. With a similar record to Tarleton, who the Mustangs took a game off of earlier this season, the Aggies saw a 7-game winning streak last weekend against then ranked #6 West Texas.

Cameron took game one in five innings, shutting out WT 8-0. Game two was a low scoring battle, as the Aggies held on for 2-1 win. The finale was another close one in which the Cameron comeback fell short, as WT took a 5-6 win.

Junior, Brenna Busby leads the team's offensive efforts through conference play with a .415 batting average and .732 slugging percentage. In 41 at bats, Busby scored 17 of the teams 45 runs on 17 hits. Abbey Warren was force in the final game versus WT driving in all five of the team's five runs, including a grand slam to tie the game.
On the mound, Freshman Breley Webb has started six games while appearing in eight. Boasting a 2.16 ERA, Webb has compiled 32.1 innings pitched, allowing 27 hits, 14 runs, walking 15 and striking out 34.

Friday's doubleheader will begin at 12 p.m., game two of the series will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.  Saturday will feature a single game at 12 p.m. to close out the series. Live stats and video stream will be provided at wnmumustangs.com
