Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker on Senior Day

Silver City, N.M – It came down to the last game of the season. With the tie breaker in their favor, after Texas A&M –Kingsville fell on the road the Western New Mexico women's basketball team sat one win away from making the conference tournament for the first time in years, and a first under third year head coach Lauren Unger.

It was a tight contest throughout, with the visiting Lions narrowly outscoring the Mustangs in every quarter. The Mustangs held a one-point lead at the two-minute mark before back-to-back layups by the Lions gave way to a 15-11 lead going into the second.  TAMUC led by as many as 11 in the second, as WNMU worked to close the gap and headed to the locker room trailing by five.

Playing catch up most of the second half, the Mustangs trailed by three after Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) connected beyond the arc. With one to go, WNMU needed one more push.

As time ran out, the Lions held on to a double-digit lead to take down the Mustangs, knocking them out of the running for the playoffs.

Senior Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) finished with 11 points, and finishes her career as a Mustang surpassing 700 points, shooting 32.9% from the floor and 30.4% from the perimeter, and an impressive 82.1% from the foul line.

Fellow senior Tatyana McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School), finished with seven points and eight rebounds ending her career ranked third in the LSC in rebounds.
