Softball Splits on Day Two Against #12 Tarleton State

Silver City, N.M—Day two of the three game series for the Lady Mustangs softball team proved to be a new day and a new team.

Game one of the day started off exciting as the team opened up the bottom half of the first getting two runners on before a blast over the center field wall by Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) gave her team a 3-2 lead, their first of the series.

The TexAnns continued their strong performance in the batter's box adding four to their total in the top of the third. Both teams would tally runs in the fifth, three of which came from another three-run bomb by Habitzreuther. Tarleton would score four more times in the following inning to call the game in six.

Game two was all Western as they took another early lead, this time off a two-run homer by Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School), bringing in Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake) for a 2-0 lead.

With two out, Tarleton's Karli Herron threatened with a double, but a pop up by Kirkpatrick ended the half. In WNMU's half of third, Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake) led with a walk before Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School) reached on a hit-by-pitch to put two runners on with no outs. Her third hit of the day, Habitzreuther singled to left field scoring Coplan and advancing Garcia. Another single would bring home Garcia and still leave multiple runners on with one out.

Despite a pitching change, Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) stepped up to bat with purpose driving a double to right center scoring one more. Back-to-back strikeouts left Castillo stranded, but Western ahead by four.

Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) pitched lights out, with the WNMU infield backing her up. Big plays all-around kept the TSU's half of the inning short and quick.

Fast forward to the bottom of the seventh, Tarleton would score once more and load the bases with Western needing one more out. An infield fly ended the inning, and the game, in favor of the Mustangs 5-2.

Five players recorded hits for the Mustangs, while freshman Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) grabs her first win of the season pitching a full game, allowing just two runs on four hits, one error and five walks.

WNMU moves to 2-14 and grabs their first conference win, and first win over a ranked opponent under head coach Elsa Cocker.

The team will travel to Midwestern State next weekend to continue conference play. Games are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday, 12 p.m. on Saturday.
