Mustangs Run Away With A Win Over UT- Permian Basin

Silver City, N.M – Despite a two-hour delay to the start time, the Mustangs were ready for redemption after yesterday's loss. Western rallied behind a complete game from Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) to take game one, before falling in game two.

The third and final game featured freshman Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) on the mound, going a complete seven innings for the Mustangs. The 7-3 win, was her third for the Mustangs.

With the Falcons up to bat, what was supposed to be a homerun ended up in favor of the Mustangs as the runner forgot to tag home plate. Vega threw home to Miranda Simjian (Humboldt, Arizona/Prescott High School) who tagged the plate for the third out, leaving UTPB scoreless.

In the bottom of the first, Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) hit one deep to left field scoring two runs to take the lead.

Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School) would crush a solo homerun in the third, followed by double from Miranda Simjian (Humboldt, Arizona/Prescott High School) to bring in three runs in the inning for a 5-0 edge.

It wasn't until the fifth and sixth innings that the Falcons got their bats going, scoring their three runs of the game.

Needing just one more out for the win, Kayla Martin drilled a double to center. Vega however would force a fly ball to center field for the final out of the game.

Western recorded 10 hits, with Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) and Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) contributing two each.

In her third win of the season, Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) allowed just three runs on 8 hits, striking out three and walking two.

The team will travel to Hobbs, New Mexico next weekend for a non-conference matchup with the University of the Southwest before continuing on to Texas A&M – Commerce to continue conference play.
