Western Splits Doubleheader Against Falcons

Silver City, N.M – After suffering a sweep on the road last weekend, the Mustangs returned home for a series against UT- Permian Basin. Both teams entered the doubleheader with similar records, and looking to build their wins.
The Falcons used the opening inning to get on the board early, scoring two off a single from Vanessa Alonzo. On the mound for the Mustangs, Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) threw back-to-back strikeouts to end the Falcons half. The bottom half of the inning started off with a walk from Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake). Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School) drilled a double to left field to score Coplan for Western's first run. Singles from Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) and Miranda Simjian (Humboldt, Arizona/Prescott High School) brought in two more runs, taking a 3-2 lead after one.

Western progressively built their lead scoring in the second, third and fifth innings. Makayla Guerra's (Silver City, N.M/Silver High School) solo homerun in the third gave her team a 5-2 edge. She hit another later in the fifth to keep the Mustangs ahead. UTPB would not go down easily though, scoring two in the fourth and another in the fifth to trail by one.
Looking to pull away, WNMU had a hitting frenzy in the bottom of the sixth. A single from Coplan, followed by a double from Garcia scored two, bringing Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) up to bat. A deep shot over the left field wall scored two more and another double put 11 on the board for WNMU, tallying four hits and five runs in the inning. Despite scoring two in the top of the seventh, the Falcons could not close in, giving WNMU game one 11-7.

Game two was back and forth as the teams traded the lead throughout. Although the Mustangs struck first, the Falcons took a 3-1 lead after the second, up until the fourth. A grand slam by Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) gave put her team on top.

The lead, however, was short lived as UTPB scored four of their own in the fifth and sixth to take back the lead.

By an identical score, Permian Basin took game two, scoring 11 runs on 17 hits, while holding the Mustangs to 7 runs on 6 hits.

Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) pitched a complete game, grabbing her second win on the season. Lyanna Waddell started game two for the Mustangs, falling to 0-2 on the season.

The third and final game of the series will begin tomorrow at 12 p.m.
