Softball Set For Home Series Against UT- Permian Basin

Silver City, N.M – Despite the break, the Western New Mexico Softball team is back in action Friday and Saturday to continue conference play against UT- Permian Basin. Friday's double-header will have first pitch at 12 p.m., game two will follow 30 minutes after. Saturday will feature a single game at 12 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT:
It's been a week since the Mustangs last competed on the road at Midwestern State. The Mustangs of Midwestern narrowly took the sweep with a 2-1 win in the closing game of the series. Game one saw the Western score the first run, but Midwestern followed up with three of their own in the bottom of the second. They would add two more in the third for a final score of 5-1. Miranda Simjian (Humboldt, Arizona/Prescott High School) tallied the lone hit of the game, while Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake) scored the lone run.

Game two was all Midwestern, scoring four in the opening inning off an error, followed by a three-run homerun to take a 4-0 lead. Western played steady defense to hold off the home team up until late when MSU scored two in the fifth and sixth, leaving WNMU scoreless.

The third and final game took all seven innings. Back-to-back doubles in the fifth scored two for MSU, the first runs of the game. In a final effort to score, Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) drilled one over the center field wall to come within one. Unfortunately, that would be the only run scored for WNMU.

Freshman, Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) went the full seven innings in game three, as well as game one. Vega pitched four innings in game two, before Lyanna Waddell came in to close.

SCOUTING THE FALCONS:
The Falcons of UTPB sit 4-18 overall, and 1-8 in the LSC, grabbing their first conference win last weekend against a tough West Texas A&M team.
Through their nine games of LSC competition, Vanessa Alonzo leads the team with a .363 hitting percentage, notching two runs on six hits and two RBIs in 17 at bats. Choco Munoz however was the hero last weekend hitting one deep for a two-run homerun leading to the team's 3-1 win.
Sophomore pitcher, Cindy Juarez pitched lights out, getting her team out of tough situations in the win and securing the win with a pop-up and two plays foul territory. Ruby Sanchez has also seen time on the mound. With a 1-3 record, Sanchez boasts a 4.70 ERA in just a little over 25 innings pitched.
