St. George, UT – In their final day of play at the 2019 Dixie State Courtyard Classic, the Lady Mustangs met up with a team they had faced nearly a week ago. The Eagles of Chadron State College kept a clean record against Western this season, taking home a 11-2 win for their second win.
The Eagles wasted no time getting on the board with a double, followed by a homerun gave them 3-0 advantage.
Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake) ran the bases well scoring, while
Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) was run down at second.
Upon scoring two more runs,
Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) was brought in as a fresh arm to help close out the inning.
Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) threatened to score in the bottom of the second with a triple to right field, but was left stranded.
Chadron continued to build their lead in the top of the third and fifth innings. Habitzreuther came up with a homerun in the bottom of the fourth to give Western their second run and what would be their final run of the game. Unable to convert in the fifth, Chadron took the win in five innings.
Alicia Habitzreuther's (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) two hits led the team. Coplan was the other hit for the Lady Mustangs. After the pitching change,
Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) finished with five runs on five hits, three walks and one strikeout.
The Lady Mustangs will return home and prepare for conference play as they hit the road again next weekend to take on the West Texas A&M – Lady Buffs for a three game series.
