Garcia and Guerra Fuel Lady Mustangs Through Conference Opener

Canyon, Tex. – Western New Mexico softball opened up conference play Friday evening against the Lady Buffs of West Texas.

WT wasted no time getting on the board after a quick top of the inning for WNMU. The Lady Buffs scored four runs in the bottom of the first on a single from Ameyla Huggins, followed by a three-run long shot from Kylee Moore to left field. Another homerun in the bottom of the second put WT up early, keeping the Mustang hitting limited.

It wasn't until the top of the fourth did the Mustangs connect. Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School) started things off with a single up the middle, followed by one from Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) to put two runners on. Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) grounded out on the first pitch, just enough to bring in Garcia for the first run of the game. WNMU found a groove on the defensive end as well, not giving up any hits or runs in the bottom of the inning.

Garcia again would find the gap, advancing to second on the throw, bringing around Grisdey Paredes – Alvarez. In a last effort, Makayla Guerra (Silver City, N.M/Silver High School) doubled to left field, but recorded the only hit and was left stranded.

WT took a 10-2 victory, off of eight hits. Makayla Guerra (Silver City, N.M/Silver High School) and Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School) recorded two hits each, with Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) adding one. Garcia was 2-for-3 on the day, with one run and one RBI.

Jayln McClain (El Centro, CA) (1-7) went the complete game, giving up 10 runs on eight hits, 12 walks and striking out one.

The Lady Mustangs will have two chances tomorrow, with the first pitch now scheduled for 12 p.m. due to weather in the forecast. Follow along with the live stats at wnmumustangs.com
