Long Time Rivalry Continues Between East and West

Silver City, N.M – After a tough loss to West Texas Thursday night, the Lady Mustangs will head back to New Mexico to take on cross town rival Eastern New Mexico for the second game of the road series.

In their lowest scoring game of the season, West Texas held Western to only 37 points, for a 26.4 shooting percentage from the field. Not only did the defense quiet the shooting, but the Lady Buffs grabbed 51 rebounds to Western's 19.

Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) put up 14 points, while Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) added a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, on top of a block and five steals.

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS:

After cruising to a 76-57 win over UT- Permian Basin Thursday night, the Greyhounds sit 15-6 overall, and 10-3 in conference play. With identical records to West Texas in the LSC, Eastern would have been one game ahead if not for a loss at Midwestern State last weekend. They did however manage to sneak away with a 68-67 win over Cameron.

After her 15 point performance against UTPB, the senior post player moves up to 4th in the LSC in scoring, averaging 15.2 points per game. Teammate Alivia Lewis is the conference leader in rebounds, grabbing 9.6 a game. Her 2.0 blocked shots puts her third in the conference standings, with 42 total on the season so far.

As a team the Greyhounds rank second in assists averaging just over 16 per game. Their passing presence? Freshman Zamorye Cox and Shelby Jones. Cox has 69 on the season already, averaging 3.3 apg. Jones adds 48 of her own for a 2.3 average.

HISTORY VERSUS THE GREYHOUNDS:

The rivalry between East and West dates back to 1977, with the East prevailing 21 out of the 29 meetings, taking the last 10-of-12 since the late 90s. In their earlier meeting this season, Eastern traveled to Silver City with hopes of avenging their 60-59 loss from last season.

Despite taking a 17-15 lead through one quarter of play, the Greyhound offense continually produced double-digits to outscore the Mustangs the rest of the game to take a 58-46 win. Destiney Johnson (El Paso, Texas/Parkland High School) finished with 10 points, hitting 4-7 shots, and 2-4 from the foul line.

Game time is set for 2 p.m. Mountain Standard time tomorrow. Live stats will be provided by the host team.
