Softball Splits on Day Two of 2019 Courtyard Classic

St. George, UT – Given the delay on day one, it was a quick turnaround for the Lady Mustangs as they opened up day two of the 2019 Courtyard Classic against Montana State University – Billings.

Western kept up their trend of scoring multiple runs in the first inning. Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School) put down a bunt for the first hit of the game, putting two runners on early. Back-to-back outs threatened the end of the inning, but a walk for Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) and Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) brought a runner home. Yasmeen Gastelum (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) singled down the right side to drive in one more run before a strikeout for MSUB ended the run.

Similar to the first, MSUB went down quickly bringing the Mustangs back into the box. Back at the top of the order, Coplan would reach on a fielding error, advancing on a single from Garcia. Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) followed up with a single bringing Coplan home. With Maldonado on first and Garcia on third, both advanced on a stolen base for the fifth run on five hits.

The following few innings were quiet for either team, before Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) homered in the bottom of the fifth for Western's sixth and final run of the game. MSUB threatened late with a homer of their own but could not convert striking out for the final out of the game and the Lady Mustangs hanging on for the first win of the season.

Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School) and Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) each had two hits, Maldonado with two RBIs. Three others tallied a hit, including Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) with her second homerun in the season.

Jayln McClain (El Centro, CA) claims her first win of the season, going all 7.0 innings allowing only 4 runs on 9 hits, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Game two of the day featured the Lady Mustangs against Northwest Nazarene.

It was a battle between the teams, with three of five total runs scored off of home runs. Northwest Nazarene scored first in the bottom of the second on a SAC fly.

Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) put Western on the board in the top of the fourth, fouling off three pitches before connecting for a homerun over left center. The tied game was short lived as the home team answered with a two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning.

In one last effort Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) singled to right field, but left stranded giving Northwest Nazarene a 4-1 win.

Western earned one run on five hits, while Jayln McClain (El Centro, CA) allowed 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 errors 5 walks and 1 strikeout through 7.0 innings on the mound.

The final day will showcase a rematch between the Lady Mustangs and Eagles from Chadron State.

These two teams met in Lubbock last weekend with the Eagles taking home an 11-15 win.
