Softball Delayed on Day One

St. George, UT – The Lady Mustangs traveled to St. George, UT for the 2019 Courtyard Classic hosted by Dixie State. Despite a bit of a delay due to field conditions, Western opened up play against Western Washington Thursday afternoon.

Western trailed early after the Vikings scored five runs out of the gate, with the fifth run crossing just before the tag to count. Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School) would get on base by a fielder's choice followed by a walk to put Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) on base. Another walk had bases loaded and Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) to the plate. With a 1-1 count, Castillo bombed her third homerun of the young season to bring in four runs.

Unfortunately, the Vikings would answer with a four-run homer in the top of the second to build the lead. Despite being down, Western maintained a strong defense to quiet the Viking's offense.

In the bottom of the fourth the Lady Mustangs bats would come alive again, starting with a double from Alexis Gonzalez (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley). With the threat of two outs and a full count, Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School) hit a shot to center field to score two more runs. Maldonado stepped up to the plate next, determined to cut into the lead, and did not disappoint hitting her second homer this season driving in two more runs to put Western at eight.

The Lady Mustangs were quieted through the final innings only scoring once more in the bottom of the fifth. Garcia was 2-4 with 2 RBIs, Castillo 2-4 with 4 RBIs and Gonzalez 3-4.

Jayln McClain (El Centro, CA) went all 7.0 innings, allowing 11 hits on 11 runs.

Almost immediately following their first game, Western moved fields to take on the host school Dixie State.

With their bats still hot, the Lady Mustangs found themselves with a 5-1 advantage after a big third inning. Dixie however had a big second half of the inning scoring six runs to take the short lived lead.

The home team continued to score in the innings to follow, adding another five in the bottom of the fifth. Unable to recover the Lady Mustangs fell 14-6 to the Trailblazers. Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake), Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) and Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) each recorded hits, alongside Makayla Guerra's (Silver City, N.M/Silver High School) two home runs. Her second fueled the third inning run to put Western ahead.

Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) and Lyanna Waddell shared pitching duties, with Vega going 5.0 innings before Waddell would close.

Day two for the Lady Mustangs will feature matchups with Montana State University – Billings at 10 a.m., followed by Northwest Nazarene at 3 p.m.
Live stats will be provided for both games.
