Cold Shooting Leads to Mustangs Defeat

Silver City, N.M – In the final weekend of the regular season, Western New Mexico women's basketball needed to win out to keep their hopes of making the conference tournament alive.

It would be nearly three minutes till either team scored, but it was Tarleton who struck first.

Tatyana McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) connected under the rim for the team's first basket, followed by an offensive rebound and the bucket from Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado). At the end of one, Western trailed by three behinds McFarland's six points. Defensively the team put on the pressure grabbing five steals.

Similar to the first, the teams were scoreless a majority of the way through the second. Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) broke a WMNU dry spell in the paint, as the team trailed 17-25 with just under three to play. Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) added another to put her team at 19. WNMU would not score again in the half, as the headed to the locker room down by 10.

On the 6-0 run to start the third, Tarleton continued to build their lead. Rachel Francisco (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) drained a three for Western's first basket of the quarter. The tables had turned, with Tarleton building a significant lead at 28-46 at the end of the third.

At the foul line, Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) knocked in both her free throws, putting her in double-digits, her eighth game in a row. She immediately followed up with a three, working to close the gap.

Cold shooting by Western, allowed the TexAnns to run away with a 60-37 win. Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) had 14 points on the night behind 4-10 shooting, and 5-6 from the free throw line.

Saturday's match is a must win for the team. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m on Drag's Court. Three seniors will also be honored that day.
