Tennis Looks Climb Regional Rankings in Texas

Odessa/Midland, Tex. -- Western New Mexico Men's and Women's Tennis head to Odessa this weekend to face conference opponent UT- Permian Basin, before continuing on to Midland to face regional opponents St. Mary's, St. Edward's and CSU - Pueblo. 

The Mustang men come off a impressive 2-0 weekend over #7 Colorado Mesa and #5 Metropolitan State Univ - Denver in St. George. Liam Fraboulet (France, Plouha/Lycée Kerraoul) led his team at the #1 position, going 2-0 in singles without dropping a set, and 1-1 in doubles with partner Joaquin Delpino (Villa Maria, Argentina ). Delpino also boasted a 2-0 record in singles play, taking down CMU's Moises Cure Robles, 6-4, 6-2 and Alejandro Martinez-Morilla of Metro State, 7-6, 6-2. 

Freshman Joel Ockernahl (Muehlacker, Germany ) continued his winning ways in singles play, bringing his record to 5-0 on the season with win's over Colorado Mesa and Metro State's #3 flight. 

The Lady Mustangs faced some tough opponents over the weekend, but came out on top against Colorado Mesa in a close 4-3 match. 

The women kicked off the weekend Friday afternoon against Stanislaus State. Carolina Torrico (Boliva) and Nicold Gonzalez (Bogota, Columbia ) grabbed the lone win at #2 doubles, defeating Megan Hagerty and Kayla Nguyen 6-4. Through singles play, Camila Gomez (Bogota, Columbia ) took home a 6-3, 6-4 win over Maria Ochoa in #2 singles, for the Lady Mustangs lone win. Stanilaus State ultimately took home an 6-1 victory. The women were next to take on Colorado Mesa, coming back from dropping the doubles-point and rallying back after dropping the first sets in singles play.  The grind paid off, as Western grabbed wins at #4, #6, #2 with Karina Diaz (Laredo, TX/United) sealing the deal with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Rebecca Osterberg for the fourth and final point. 


The Lady Mustangs closed out the weekend dropping a 6-1 decision to Dixie State, and a 3-4 heartbreaker to Metro State. Versus host Dixie State, Julai Tozzi grabbed the lone win at #1 singles, defeating Yolena Carlon, 6-1, 4-6, 10-1. Karina Kolovos Diaz continued her winning ways with a win over Eliza McKean 7-5, 6-2 of MSUD. Camila Gomez (Bogota, Columbia ) notched a win for Western at #2 singles defeating Alex Pessoa 6-3, 6-4, while teammate Carolina Torrico (Boliva) got her 2nd singles win of the weekend with a dominating performance over Ainsley Winterrowd 6-2, 6-2.
