Silver City, N.M –Western New Mexico Women's Basketball are on the road for the final time this season, looking to continue their two-game winning streak. First up, the Angelo State RamBelles on Thursday evening, followed by the Javelinas of Texas A&M – Kingsville on Saturday afternoon. Wins this weekend will help to push the Lady Mustangs into the top-8 that go on and make the conference tournament.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Lady Mustangs (9-14, 5-11 LSC) hosted Midwestern State for the first game of the weekend, looking to avenge their earlier season loss in Wichita Falls. MSU got out to a quick start, taking an 8-0 lead before a layup by
Destiney Johnson (El Paso, Texas/Parkland High School) broke the scoring run. It wasn't until the two minute mark in the first quarter did WNMU start finding the basket, trailing by two going into the second quarter. MSU boasted a 23 point second quarter to take a 37-29 edge at the half. Western answered with 22 points of their own after the half, and outscored MSU 18-15 in the fourth to hold on for a 69-67 win.
Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) had her fourth game in a row in double figures with 22 points, while grabbing 7 boards.
Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) added 15 of her own, followed by Tatyanna McFarland with 12 and
Destiney Johnson (El Paso, Texas/Parkland High School) with 10.
The Western women continued their winning ways, Saturday afternoon against Cameron, taking a 69-56 victory. WNMU outscored the Aggies in all but one quarter, shooting 43.4 percent from the field, 31.3 percent from the perimeter, and 64.3 percent from the foul line.
After a quiet third quarter by both teams, Cameron threatened within eight points of the Mustangs. A 10-0 scoring run late in the fourth, Western separated themselves taking home a 2-0 weekend record. Fields had another 22 point performance, going 3-8 from three point range. She also grabbed three of the team's eight steals, and six rebounds.
SCOUTING THE RAMBELLES:
The RamBelles of Angelo State (18-4, 13-3 LSC) come off a tough 0-2 weekend on the road, dropping their match against West Texas for the second time this season, followed by a 71-67 loss at Eastern New Mexico. The loss cause a three way tie between the Rambelles, Greyhounds and Lady Buffs for the top spot.
As a team, Angelo holds a 15.7 scoring margin over their opponents, averaging 76.1 ppg. Senior guard, Marquita Daniels not only leads the team in scoring but also the conference, averaging 16.2 ppg. She posted a season high 29-points last weekend against Eastern, shooting 41% from the field. Teammate, De'Anira Moore sits second on the team scoring with 14.4 ppg, and ranks second in the LSC in field goal percentage with a 54.4.
Moore also post big numbers for the RamBelles defense, averaging 7.5 rebounds per game, putting her fourth overall in the LSC and one spot behind Western's Tatyanna McFarland. Her 1.1 blocks also puts her in the top-10 in the conference.
HISTORY VERSUS THE RAMBELLES:
First year Head Coach Renae Shippy continues to the lead her team to the top of the conference, while boating national rankings as well.
In their first meeting of the season, ASU took a 72-60 win on Drag's Court. Asia Davis posted 17 points in the win, outscoring the Lady Mustangs in three of the four quarters. With the win, ASU leads the series 5-0 since WNMU joined the Lone Star Conference in 2016.
SCOUTING THE JAVELINAS:
Texas A&M – Kingsville (8-15, 5-11 LSC) are currently riding a seven game losing streak. Their last win came over Midwestern State back on Jan. 24
th. The Javelinas hold the ninth spot in scoring offense with 61.3 points per game, while their opponents take a 70.8 advantage, outscoring the Javelinas by a 9.5 margin. Junior Brynae Thompsen leads the offensive efforts with 15.4 points, shooting 42.1% from the field, fifth overall in the LSC scoring ranks.
On the opposite side of the ball, Bri-Anna Soliz grabs 6.7 boards for her team, while also averaging 1.2 steals a game, and 0.4 blocks.
Both teams boast a 5-11 record, tied for the eighth and final playoff spot. The final two weekends of play will determine who moves on.
HISTORY VERSUS THE JAVELINAS:
In their meeting earlier this season in Silver City, it was the Javelinas who took home a 64-62 win. It was neck and neck throughout, until the last five minutes of the fourth quarter when TAMUK took a seven point lead on a three from Cloe Lane.
Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) answered with 43 seconds left to put WNMU within one. A last minute layup effort by failed to fall as TAMUK held on for the victory.
The Lady Mustangs have only beat the Javelinas one other time since joining the Lone Star, dating back to the 2016 season.
SUPERIOR SENIORS:
Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) and Tatyanna McFarland continue to make the most of their time on the court. Fields leads her team's offensive output with 11.3 ppg, putting her 18
th in the LSC rankings. The El Paso native will look to continue her five-game streak scoring in double figures.
Tatyanna McFarland handles the other side of the ball, maintaining a top-three ranking in rebounds with 8.2 on the season. The senior from Riverside, CA transferred to Silver City after playing at Texas A&M- Kingsville and has contributed greatly to the Mustangs defense.
